10 Simple Ways to Boost Your Spiritual Wellness
Introduction by Host: Dr. Gee
This week in our holistic wellness series, we are discussing spiritual wellness. Many people think that all they have to do to be spiritually well is to participate in religious activities, but that is only a small part of spiritual wellness. Let’s discuss what spiritual wellness is and how we can strengthen it.
Point 1: What is Spiritual Wellness
Spiritual wellness is all about spiritual honesty. It is represented by one’s personal beliefs and values. It involves having meaning, purpose, and a sense of balance and peace. Why do you do what you do and believe what you believe? That is what spiritual wellness is comprised of.
Point 2: 3 Key Areas to Consider
When it comes to spiritual wellness, there are three key areas to consider. Belief, Involvement, and Time. Let’s look at Beliefs first. Have you taken a look at what you believe and why you believe it? Have you looked outside of what you grew up believing? Do not just assume that what you grew up with is what is the best or most accurate. For involvement, how are you involved in improving your spiritual life? What about the lives of those around you? And finally, time. What do you spent your time doing? Is spiritual wellness occupying a healthy percentage of your time, or do you only give the bare minimum?
Point 3: 10 Ways to Boost Spiritual Health
1) Explore Your Personal Values. We all grew up with values that were just assumed. This is not inherently good or bad, but it is worth considering what those values are? Do you agree with them all, or are there areas that, after closer examination, you find that you disagree?
2) Question and Clarify Your Values. Now that you know what you believe, it is time to examine those values. Are they what you want to believe? Do some of your values need to change? Take the time to examine your own values.
3) Become Aware of How Values Change. What you value will change over your lifetime. That does not mean that what you value now is bad, but be aware of how life’s circumstances will develop and change how you think and what you value.
4) Become Aware of the Differences in Values. Everybody values different things. What you value may differ from what your friend values. Learn from each other and do not fight because you place different emphasis on what you consider to be an important value.
5) Connect with Your Purpose. Take some time to figure out what you want to accomplish, and begin to work towards it. We are not on this earth forever, so make your time count.
6) Create Spiritual Habits. Develop patterns of spiritual practices. Make growing your spiritual health into a routine part of your life.
7) Practice Mindfulness. Mindfulness means different things to different people. I do not necessarily mean meditation or yoga, but taking time to reflect at the end of the day is important to spiritual growth.
8) Develop Integrity by Following Your Values. When you have values, make sure that your actions represent that. If you are living a life that does not adhere to your values, make a change in your lifestyle.
9) Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude. Every day that you wake up, be grateful. Life may not be perfect, but everyone has things to be thankful for. Having a positive attitude makes life much more bearable, even in the hard times.
10) Take Part in Organized Religion/Community. If you want to keep growing in your spiritual health, you need like-minded people around you, if possible. We are social creatures, and when it comes to spirituality, it is no different. We can live alone, but we can only thrive together.
Closing Thoughts
The whole point of spiritual wellness is to find inner peace, to know who you are, and live a fulfilled life on earth. Everyone wants to find peace, but there is not a magic guide to discovering your purpose and peace in life. I hope these tips we have discussed today will help you begin to discover who you are and what your spiritual purpose is in this life.
